It is not a bad idea to start a statement of beliefs by pointing to the Apostles’ Creed. It may be a bit antiquated in its wording but no other statement of beliefs says so much with so few words. And so Christ’s Church for Brooklyn, along with so many other Christian communities, adheres to that historic creed.
Those of us who make up Christ’s Church for Brooklyn (CCfB) are touched and transformed by the story of Jesus Christ. Some of us are broken and hurt but the story of Jesus assures us that we can be made whole and that we are not alone in our pain. The story of Jesus Christ allows us to celebrate the subtle but unmistakable truth that God is in charge, despite all appearances to the contrary.
We learn about this story through the Bible and so we understand the Bible to be an authority on matters of living life for God. The Bible amazes us in its timelessness; in its beauty; in its ability to convey truths. We open our Bibles with humility and open minds knowing that God’s Word is dynamic and not static.
CCfB is committed to community because we believe God has created us to live in community rather than isolation. With the help of God’s Spirit we desire to be a community that is honest with God and others, and committed to following Christ’s example of servanthood. We realize that people of deep faith can, at times, come to divergent beliefs on certain issues. We don’t expect full agreement on all things but hope for dialogue that is respectful as we listen for God’s voice. We welcome people from all spheres of life to join us on this journey to become whole people of God.
