It's hard for me to read this sitting at my desk at work. I want to shout. And cry. And say Amen. And hug somebody. And be hugged by somebody. And whisper thank you.

My emotions are not only because of my personal beliefs about what the ELCA has done. But they're equally because (to further quote the article linked in the post):

"Jesus is between the red and the green microphones, between the red and the blue states offering us life and salvation in the words of eternal life and in the sacrament of his own body and blood. Jesus right there between the liberals and conservatives speaking the word that the first shall be last and the last shall be first. Jesus standing there saying forgive as you have been forgiven."

It was in high school reading this sermon from his collection of sermons The Shaking of the Foundations that I came to faith. Powerful time in my life, and I've been indebted to Tillich ever since. Hope it went well! :)

I'm looking forward to this...glad I didn't miss it last week, after all. Though of course I would never claim that God micro-managed that "providential" mixup just for my benefit...:)

My church taught me that God is vengeful, and that my purpose as a Christian is simply to bring others to know and agree with our very narrow view of God. A God who feels that everyone is not created equal, that certain relationships are more holy than others, that heaven is small and has room for only a few of us there.

My church taught me that I am only as good as the number of people I bring to this narrow view. And that there is only a place for me in this tiny heaven if I can sway people to this way, regardless of harmful it may be for them. And really, my church taught me that there was really no room there for me.

Because of this, I need my church to open to everyone without condition. For there to be room for disagreement and discussion and change. To provide a place of rest for those who have been left outside.
