Who knew the indie music scene in Denton, Texas was noteworthy? Apparently one of my basketball teammates here in the city knew that. On assignment for the Travel Section of the New York Times, Lionel flew to Denton to check out the music scene. You can read his article here.
Denton? Really?

I meant to comment on your previous post about where home is; I have been following your blog for several years. I am from Denton! I think its great that your friend wrote this article. I even think one of the men he mentioned playing down on the square (the 80 yr old) goes to my church! My brothers band is one of the ones that has been trying to make it “big” and plays in several of these places.
Oh yes. All of the musician kids I knew in high school wanted to go to UNT to be a part of Denton’s burgeoning music scene. It used to be about the jazz bands at the college, but has grown outside. And even better…it’s the illustrious city of my birth.
Denton - yes!! Excellent music scene there. It’s where Darren and I went to college and met - Darren went there for the awesome music program at UNT (NTSU back in our day), in fact. Some bands out of Denton that you might’ve heard of: Bowling for Soup, Brave Combo, Norah Jones (studied music there - originally from Grapevine, I think), Flickerstick.
In 2006, Rolling Stone Magazine said UNT (in Denton) was the #1 music school in the country, and Denton was the #2 city for experiencing live music, 2nd only to Austin, TX.
We have one of the most losing football teams in the Sunbelt Conference, but our marching band is unmatchable!
Welcome to the blog of Joe Hays, minister for Christ's Church for Brooklyn. We are a loving community of believers who seek to be the hands and feet of Christ, in service to our neighbors in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn and beyond.
