a marriage of the two

jesusdarwin.jpgIs this possible? Yes, says Michael Dowd, a leading proponent of evolutionary theology. But I think we would all agree on one level or another that this still should not be considered for public school science curriculum, right?

How many of you would put this sticker on your  car’s bumper? :) Go check out the article over at Wired. You can find it here.

Nah, that’s an ugly bumper sticker. My theistic evolution bumper sticker of choice would just be a Jesus fish -but with legs. :)

His new book “Thank God for Evolution!” actually shows science as the most sacred collective endeavor in the history of humanity. So, from that perspective, the question is do you want science-based evolution taught in schools. Whether you assign meaning to the mystery is another matter. That’s a personal choice of course, but Dowd does a great job of showing how accepting science and practicing *any* religious tradition do not have to be in conflict as long as you don’t interpret religious literature literally, in which case you’re probably ignoring science no matter how high the mountain of evidence. I think Dowd’s is the first sane approach to the insane debate over evolution that has been going on for decades. It makes me wonder what life must have been like for people who were trying to get the church to understand that world wasn’t flat.
