Advent has officially kicked off and we are now waiting: waiting to re-tell the story of Christ’s birth and waiting for the second coming of Christ. Once upon a time, it took on the same tone as that of Lent with it’s focus on penitence and fasting. You won’t find many churches who advocate these practices during this season as most of us have given in to the culture of celebration that starts hyping Christmas the day after Halloween. But still there are those who can’t and won’t sing Joy to the World, O Come Let Us Adore Him or The First Noel until the worship service on December 24th. For them, that’s when Christmas begins.
I’m not that strict with my own practices and more than likely CCFB will enjoy singing Joy to the World before Christmas Eve (we won’t have a December 24th service) but I appreciate those who take the season so seriously as they remind us that things here on earth on not yet what they should be.
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!
